Atkins original ‘British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions’ book combined 12 ‘Fascicles’ or individual parts. Sets of cyanotype prints created at different times over ten years were gifted to friends, who then bound them together to form a book.

Barker’s twelve research notebooks represent Atkins twelve ‘Fascicles’ and record the working process throughout the project, documenting her thought process which combines research, historical information, science and art.

The notebooks detail initial ideas showing her method from the recovery of the specimens, inspiration from seaweed, photographs of clothing, the history of Anna Atkins, Herschel and J Whatman paper, cyanotype experiments, scientific research and articles concerning the fashion issue, maps and locations.
