Comparisons

The comparison and similarity to Atkins work is not intended to mis-lead, but to intrigue, with the aim of engaging a wider audience with the issue. Informing through the recovery of discarded clothing, alongside science and research, it is hoped will lead to action and change within the fashion industry, with the intention of gaining impact that will go on to change the world.

Initially the images created were very similar to Atkins compositions of algae, but as the work progressed Barker began to make the work her own. Presenting pieces of clothing as they were found on the shoreline has formed the majority of prints in the new book.

Changed ‘specimens’ - from the original algae to recovered clothing, are shown here in direct comparison. Synthetic fibre compositions intended to look like algae, make it difficult to tell one from the other. Change - not only by way of ‘specimens’ but of a changed world Atkins could never have known. To inform her of this, regretfully, a handwritten letter is inserted towards the end of the book (Dearest Anna,).
